Classes

Sailing classes are scheduled year-round and Monterey Sailing Academy can arrange for special private courses as well.  Each ASA sailing course includes fifteen to twenty hours on the water and in the classroom.  Students are furnished with a textbook and any other needed materials.  Sailing certification for each course requires a satisfactory grade on a written test based on the material in the text.   See Prices for pricing an duration information.

Intro

Introduction to Sailing

This is a half-day program designed to give a brief sailing experience to persons who have little experience but who may want to learn how to sail. You will have a chance to help with hoisting sails and trimming sheets as well as a turn at the helm. One hour in classroom instruction and three hours under sail.

ASA Courses

Basic Keelboat Certification (BKS)

This course involves fifteen to twenty hours instruction (four in classroom) and it is designed to give you the ability to sail a small keelboat (20 to 25 feet) in light to moderate winds and sea conditions in familiar waters without supervision. You must pass both sailing and written exams to be certified.

Basic Coastal Cruising (BCC)

Also fifteen to twenty hours of classroom and on-the-water training, this course is designed to give you the skills to sail larger boats and to perform more advanced sailing techniques. This prepares you for independent sailing along the coast to other landfalls and returning safely to home port. You will learn some basic coastal navigation and more advanced sailing procedures. You must pass both on-the-water and written test to become certified.

Bare Boat Chartering (BBC)

This course builds on the skills you have learned in BKB and BCC certification courses, preparing you for private boat rentals both here in Monterey and in other locations around the world. You will learn how to navigate, pilot and manage a boat in open seas and how to sail safely in many different circumstances you may face in passage making. The course prepares you for longer voyages in unfamiliar waters. Certification requires successful demonstration of sailing skills and pasing a written examination.

Coastal Navigation (CNAV)

Able to demonstrate the navigational theory required to safely navigate a sailing vessel in coastal or inland waters. There is no Sailing Skills part to this Standard and practical application of this sailing knowledge is found in the Advanced Coastal Cruising Standard.

Advanced Coastal Cruising (ACC)

Able to safely act as skipper and crew of a sailing vessel about 30 to 50 feet in length. This is a day and nighttime Standard in coastal and inland water, in any weather.
